We at First United Methodist Church seek to offer a variety of study
and fellowship activities for children that compliment the efforts
of parents in nurturing their growth as Christian disciples. We see
Christian education of children as primarily the responsibility of
the home and family. It is in the Christian home and family that children
most effectively experience and learn Christian concepts in daily
living - where those concepts are modeled.
We urge parents to read Bible stories to their children, place Christian
reading materials in their hands, share prayers at mealtime and devotional
times, and help children know how to relate to God, to people, and to
situations as Christ’s disciples.
Through our Children & Family Ministries at First UMC, we seek to support the
learning in the home - to lead children to Christian attitudes and actions.
We are here to serve you. Please let us know how we can best be in ministry
to you and your child. Our Director of Children and Family Ministries
is Spring Hill Edwards. You may contact her at 505-243-5646 x 24 or

Children’s Sunday School
For our Sunday school program at First UMC, the children share in prayer,
Bible lessons, arts and crafts, music, and snacks. (In an effort to
accommodate children with nut allergies, First UMC has a “no-nut”
policy. We also want to accommodate any other allergies your child
may have, so please let us know.)
Sunday school classes start at 9:40 AM in each classroom and end at
10:40 AM. We ask that parents please pick up their children promptly
after class so that our Sunday school teachers may continue with the
rest of their morning.
PreK (3+): Room 110
K- Grade 2: Room 205A
Grade 3 – 5: Room 205B
Children move up to their next class grade at the beginning of the APS school year and we celebrate with Promotion Sunday (usually in mid-August). Preschool is slightly different in terms of when children start the class. As soon as your child turns three they may begin attending the preschool Sunday school class. There is no need to wait until “Promotion Sunday”. Follow the link below to take a look at the curriculum that we will be using this year.
Summer Sunday School
Our summer program (based on the APS school year) often combines classes
and most of the Choir practices do not occur. Signs are posted on
classroom doors with information. Please contact Spring Hill Edwards
if you have questions.
Children’s Choir
The last children's choir rehearsals, before summer break, will take place on May 23rd.
Children ages 3 through fifth grade are invited to participate in our
children’s choirs. Choir is held on Sunday mornings from 9:00am – 9:35am.
PreK (3+): Cherub Choir (Room 110)
K-2nd grade: Carol Choir (Room 211)
3rd-5th grade: Celebration Singers (Room 214)
Carol Choir & Celebration Singers DO NOT rehearse during the summer months. The Cherub Choir meets year-round.
Acolytes
Children and youth (from 3rd through 12th grade) may serve as an Acolyte
for the Traditional worship service. Responsibilities include lighting
and extinguishing the altar candles and assisting the pastor during
baptisms. Training is held each fall, but children are welcome to
join anytime! For more information, contact the church office at 505-243
-5646.
It is our calling and our mandate to insure safe sanctuaries for God’s people.
