Family Promise of Albuquerque
We are hosting families April 8-15. If you would like to participate in this ministry, call Pace VanDevender at 228.9998.
First United Methodist Church is a founding faith community of Family Promise of Albuquerque. Our church and several other local
faith communities each take homeless families into our communities for
one week at a time in a continuous sequence of care to provide housing,
meals, and transportation while they work to find jobs and housing. Candidate families are screened by the Family Promise Director to find
the highest potential families for us to help. Each family we host
must have children, be free of drugs and alcohol, and pass a national
background check with the police.
During the week that First UMC hosts families, our guests are treated to a hosted dinner, spend the night in private family rooms, and are provided breakfast before being taken to the day center. The children attend day care or school while their parents look for housing and jobs. The families are brought back to the church at the end of the day.
Volunteers and guests learn from each other. The courage with which our guests—including their children—address the challenges before them is inspiring and keeps our volunteers coming back to give again.
Family Promise of Albuquerque is a not-for-profit organization that started on the east coast in 1988; Albuquerque is the 104th city to become involved in this mission. Each family has an individualized plan and must make sufficient progress towards self-sufficiency each week to remain in the program. The national program has maintained a success rate about 85% for many years, and the Albuquerque program is maturing toward that rate as well.
