For over 30 years, the Shadow of the Church (SOC) Grace Meal Ministry has opened its doors to those in need. Every Monday at noon, a group of dedicated volunteers gathers to provide a hot meal for as many as 250 people, including families with young children. Some of the volunteers prepare and serve the meal, while others greet the guests and tend to their needs. If you are interested in serving in this vital and rewarding ministry, please call 505.243.5646 or e-mail the church at mail@firstumcabq.org. Please consider donating to Grace Meal through the Smith's Rewards Program. Your gift will be most appreciated!
Shadow of the Church Grace Meal
First United Methodist Church is a founding faith community of Family Promise of Albuquerque. Our church and several other local faith communities each take homeless families into our communities for one week at a time in a continuous sequence of care to provide housing, meals, and transportation while they work to find jobs and housing. Candidate families are screened by the Family Promise Director to find the highest potential families for us to help. Each family we host must have children, be free of drugs and alcohol, and pass a national background check with the police. During the week that First UMC hosts families, our guests are treated to a hosted dinner, spend the night in private family rooms, and are provided breakfast before being taken to the day center. The children attend day care or school while their parents look for housing and jobs. The families are brought back to the church at the end of the day. Volunteers and guests learn from each other. The courage with which our guests—including their children—address the challenges before them is inspiring and keeps our volunteers coming back to give again. Family Promise of Albuquerque is a not-for-profit organization that started on the east coast in 1988; Albuquerque is the 104th city to become involved in this mission. Each family has an individualized plan and must make sufficient progress towards self-sufficiency each week to remain in the program. The national program has maintained a success rate about 85% for many years, and the Albuquerque program is maturing toward that rate as well. Prayer Shawl Ministry meets the first Wednesday of the month (September-May) in Room 211 at 5:30. The group is open to anyone who knits, crochets, quilts, or who would like to learn. Part of our purpose is to offer fellowship and community. The other part is to create shawls. The journey of making a shawl involves thinking about and praying for the person who will receive the shawl. Some of these people may be ill, some may be caring for loved ones and need to feel they are being cared for as well, and others may be celebrating accomplishments. For each of these people, the shawl is meant to represent the love of God being wrapped around them. For more information about this ministry or to request a shawl, send an email, mail@fumconline.org and put "prayer shawl" in the subject line or give us a call, 505.243.5646.
Hospitality  Our Hospitality ministry helps in welcoming people to worship services, handing out the worship service bulletins and assisting with seating are only a few of the duties of our ushers and greeters. For more information, or to participate as an usher or greeter, please call 505.243.5646 or email office@firstumcabq.org.
